NoInputMixer: Orientation!

Very detailed review and walkthrough of NoInputMixer app.

NoInputMixer (iOS/Mac) is an experimental feedback-based musical instrument that models an analog mixing console, designed to create a wide range of amazing, otherworldly electronic sounds by feeding the mixer's output back to its input.

You're not supposed to connect the output of a mixing board to its input. “You might see a caution notice in a manual for a mixer if you buy one, saying 'This might cause feedback,'” says Toshimaru Nakamura, one of Japan's leading experimental musicians. “Feedback is probably something sound technicians want to avoid, but it sometimes makes musicians happy and excited. So, I did what the manual says not to do.” Nakamura found that after rerouting the signal back into the mixer, the resulting feedback could be controlled with its knobs and faders. In doing so, Nakamura created the no-input mixing board, an instrument that has been deployed worldwide in experimental circles.

NoInputMixer (iOS/Mac) updated to version 1.2

The Strange World of No-Input Mixing

No-Input Mixing is a strange and somewhat counter-intuitive process of generating sound from a mixing board without external sound sources. In its essence, it involves routing mixer outputs back into inputs, creating feedback and oscillations largely driven by the self-noise of the device.

By using this technique in the creative process, the sound designer can explore many different and special ways to create sound. Unsettling soundscapes perfect for sci-fi, dystopian and horror projects, like strange noises, disrupted signals, broken communication, buzzing drones, faulty machinery, futuristic tech sounds, and glitchy elements are some results of the No-Input Mixing technique.

NoInputMixer app models an analog mixing console and effects rack in detail, giving you the ability to create a huge number of feedback configurations with additional effects. It consists of a seven-channel mixer and an effects rack with eight slots. Each effect slot can be configured as an insert effect for a mixer channel or used with two send/return buses. The easy-to-use user interface allows you to switch between classic mixer view or complete control of single channel. In addition, a large set of ready-to-use drone and noise presets with a parameter randomizer provide a great point for quickly getting started with this app.

What's new in version 1.2:

  • Redesigned and improved user interface (you can revert to previous in the app settings).
  • The new option to set the parameters of the current channel to their initial state.
  • Added a lot of new drone/noise presets (Thanks to Robert Dowell!).
  • Some minor bugs were fixed.
