The Sound of Now: 432 hz dronescape

Ambient dronescape composition from Sonic Sanctuary (with SynthScaper app).

"Here's my first composition using SynthScaper. I managed to figure out how to do everything I wanted to, so I'm pretty happy about that. I built the scene using sounds commonly used in real-world sound baths but this allows me to achieve a more layered, generative result that I think is a step up. And since it's a live jam I can do this for live gatherings as well when that becomes possible."

The redefinition of noise

Finding beauty in an unlikely place. App Store Preview.

The word “noise” generally conjures up some negative connotations. Synonyms could include “loud”, “abrasive”, “unnecessary” and “non-essential”, whether it’s audiovisual in nature or in reference to something modern like sorting large amounts of data through a computer.

Classic FX ver. 2.2 new features walkthrough

An excellent overview of the new features of Classic FX version 2.2 from Gavinski’s Tutorials.

Gavin McCloskey writes:

"This is a really excellent update of Classic FX by Igor Vasiliev that brings the app to a new level. I think this is a somewhat under appreciated and misunderstood app. In the video I will talk about the 3 main new features and show you how to use the brilliant new triple-linked lfo section, which looks very complex at first, but is easy once you figure it out. I’ll show you how this app can be used for subtle effects but can also get pretty batshit crazy, which, let’s face it, is what a lot of us hope for in an app from Igor Vasiliev."

Processing guitar with the Classic FX app

Two great examples of how to make your guitar sound more interesting with the Classic FX app.

Almost all presets are suitable for changing the sound of a guitar. Some of the presets enhance the sound and make it smoother and more atmospheric. More drastic presets will add distortion and oversaturation.

For any preset, you can set the level of its presence at the output using the "Effect mix" control.

For more details on effects and parameters, see the app description.

Classic FX ver. 2.2 has been released

Classic FX version 2.2 released with a new LFO option and even more processing algorithms and presets.

In this update a new LFO option has been added for automating morphing between the two effect slots A and B. Now you have three linked LFOs to create more complex waveforms to modify the morphing. Or you can use one LFO for simple automation. Each LFO has two ranges, fast and slow and two types of waveforms. You can set the LFO frequency in beats synchronized with the main BPM, or in seconds. Also you can see the final waveform of all the LFOs on a graph at different scales.

This update brings six new processing algorithms based on reverse delay, saturation and distortion. These new algorithms Back Talk, Bitcrusher, Oversaturate, Gated Echo, Gated Reverse and Shining will give a completely new sound to any instrument or voice, from soft saturation and ambient fuzziness to sharp and hard overdrives and bit reduction.

Complex and integrated effects sound much more varied and interesting than simple effect modules, and will give you the opportunity not to waste time looking for combinations of single effects, but to start creative work with the sound of your instruments right away.

Extended morphing LFO in Classic FX

In upcoming Classic FX app version 2.2 will be added extended LFO for morphing. This will expand the possibilities for experimenting with audio processing in the app.

There will be three LFOs in series where each LFO will add value or multiply the next one. Thus, you can create quite complex and varied morphing automation. But you can continue use only one LFO for simple morphing cycle.

LFO range can defines in beats or seconds. When use beats mode it will be synced with BPM and clock (internal or external). Each LFO has two ranges: Fast, from 0.25 to 32 beats or from 0.1 to 13 sec and Slow, from 33 to 160 beats or from 12 to 139 sec. The waveform of LFOs can be sine or triangle. For two LFOs, you can shift the phase. This adds even more variations to the output control signal. On the Morphing LFO screen, you can see a real graph of the output control signal.

In the new version, you can add the LFO output to the current morphing value, which is set by the large fader at the bottom of the main screen. This way you can change the morphing relative to the current value. The offset range from the current morphing value is set by the triangle fader on the bottom of main screen.

Now you can set the transition time from slot A to slot B regardless of the LFO range. Going directly to slot A or B is selected by two buttons at the bottom of the main screen.

Some new sound processing app

I started working on a new audio processing application that will be a completely different type of sound effects. It is not even quite the sound effect as it is usually understood. It is something between a sound effect and a musical instrument or sound generator.

This application will also process the source signal, but unlike the usual audio effects, it does this based not on static parameter values, but on the basis of determining the internal structure of the input signal over time.

In classic sound effects, even if they dynamically react to changes in the amplitude or even the spectrum (which is much less common) of the signal, all processing is determined by a set of static parameters. It doesn't matter that these parameters can be changed by the LFO, since the LFO parameters are still static in relation to the structure of the input signal. In that effects, you know (mostly) how to change the input signal depending on the change in these parameters.

In my new app, signal processing will be determined by the time-varying structure of the signal itself.

This app analyzes the spectrum of the input signal and, based on statistical processing of data vectors and self-balanced feedbacks, reveals new fragments appearing in the input signal. Next, the fragments of the input signal will be reassembled in a different order by the genetic algorithms that will create the best (from their point of view) composition based on the contents of these fragments and some specified rules of creation the composition.

The result should be quite unusual. But this is not a mainstream effect. This is an app for pure creativity and experimentation. You influence the result not by the settings (although they will also be), but by the character and rhythm of the input signal.

Imagine that you can provide to the input both finished compositions and tracks, as well as mixes of sounds of various musical instruments (modular synths will be just great), sounds of nature and noises, and on the output will be a composition built from fragments of these sounds according to the new dynamic rules.

This is a preview of the work of the first part of this app, which finds new fragments in the spectrum of the input signal, linking their appearance to the internal rhythm as much as possible. The parameters in the left corner are adjusted via self-balancing feedback.

While this application is still under development, take a look at my other sound processing and experimental apps:

Cracking God's Roof

A very interesting study by Willard Van De Bogart (Bangkok University - language institute) about intuitive nature of creating electronic music with tablet computers. Two of my applications SynthScaper and SoundScaper were used in this work.

This research inspire me to think about the direction of my next applications. I would like to create not just a rigid tool for creating sound, no matter how complicated it is, but an applications with which the user could interact as an object with its own fuzzy logic. And as a result of the interaction, bring our own ideas into this logic and receive unique content in return. So that users are not forced to adapt to the application, but rather to creatively interact in search of their own sound.

That is what I plan to do in the near future (after the release of my new application). I plan a lot of experiments to create very unusual samples for this idea. There will be many photos and videos.

CRACKING GOD'S ROOF: MANIFESTATION AND ADAPTATION ON THE INTUITIVE NATURE OF CREATING ELECTRONIC MUSIC WITH TABLET COMPUTERS

Abstract

Electronic music is advancing not only in the way it is being used in performance but also in the way it is evolving technologically due to software developers advancing the ability of the synthesizer to enable the composer to create newer sounds. The introduction of the amino acid and protein synthesizers from MIT is one such example along with sampling sounds from interstellar bodies through the process of sonification in order to create presets as additional source material for the composer's palette. The creative process used in creating electronic music on a tablet computer introduces a new musical instrument to be used in live music performances. The fluidity and immediacy of how electronic sounds can be created with tablet computer synthesizers affords the composer to have a new behavioral sense of using the tablet synthesizers as a musical instrument that can be played intuitively. Exploring this new interface of musical composition with tablet synthesizers is a subject this paper will address as well as the psychological aspects of how an audience can relate to electronic music as an emerging art form removed from the classical music tradition. What is also covered is how the composer of electronic music can affect the listener's ability to envision new conceptual landscapes leading to experiencing new ideas and subjective fields of visionary experiences. The composer's ability to use conceptual models which influence the way sounds are made and how those sounds influence the listener's experience is an important aspect of this paper.

Creating samples with SynthScaper app

SynthScaper app on iPad uses for design the samples with real tape saturation on the tube reel-to-reel tape recorder and experimental loudspeaker.

Output from the SynthScaper app was recorded on the tube reel-to-reel tape recorder (single track on the tape Quantegy 632 1/4" on 3,3/4 ips, 9.5 cm/sec) thru external audio interface Focusrite Scarlett 6i6. For control the SynthScaper app was used MIDI keyboard Akai MPK49.

The recorded sound was playback thru special experimental loudspeaker and was recorded on Roland V-Studio 100 by using Sennheiser microphone. Microphone was connected thru mix console.

Low part of the signal below about 600 Hz was recorded on the both channels directly. Mid and High part were processed by the AKG Adr 68k reverb with preset "Large Hall" with the stereo output. It gives interested sound effect with the close and centered base like solid drone and panoramic mid and high.
