FieldScaper - Sound warp field recorder and scape constructor

Advanced field recorder combined with a sound warp engine and a collection of ready to use dynamic presets for iPad and iPhone. Discover new ways to create and construct unusual and exciting sounds from any environmental audio recordings or samples recorded from other apps through Inter-App audio or Audiobus.

>>> Get this app on App Store

The main advantage is that you can record and modify samples along the way within the single app. You can record sounds and noises, delete unwanted parts and then use presets to give a whole new sounding or create spectacular soundscapes and textures to use them as loops in this app. And even use FieldScaper as effect in real time with other apps or external input.

The FieldScaper consists of two main parts. The first part is the field recorder with special options for different ways of record environmental sound from microphone or record other sound sources. With the sample editor you can cut or split the source sample for more convenient use. The second part is the scaper sound engine that with using dynamic presets can easily transform the most ordinary sounds into something absolutely different.

These parts connect with each other into one whole but you can use recorder or scaper independently.

FieldScaper has different user interface for iPhone / iPad in portrait and landscape orientation. In portrait orientation the screen is divided between Recorder and Oscillator controls. You can easily record new sample and immediately load and process it in the oscillator. For more convenient use of this application as field recorder on iPhone just rotate it to landscape orientation. This transforms the user interface into full screen recorder without oscillator. This mode is very useful for recording and editing samples on iPhone.

On iPad in landscape orientation on the screen placed the Recorder and controls for all three Oscillators. This mode is suitable for recording and operating with samples when you use FieldScaper in real-time as instrument with all three oscillators, especially with MIDI controllers.

FieldScaper screenshots for iPad (landscape). Click on image to enlarge.

In addition you can switch the user interface to the mode of Looper. This mode is specially designed for use FieldScaper as real-time effect processor and looper. All controls are made so that you can quickly change presets and samples, use the main controls for oscillators and select the mode for processing the input signal.

The scaper sound engine contains three sample-based oscillators each with filters, delay, distortion and a spatial mixer. Most of parameters can be assigned to individual low-frequency oscillators. You can control several these parameters in different ranges using the "Main effect" fader. These features give you the abilty to create continuously changing, breaking and glitching sound forms and loop-based effects from ordinary samples of synths, guitars, voices or everyday sounds of your environment.

The FieldScaper supports complete MIDI control for all faders, knobs and many buttons. You can change the parameters of oscillators, filters, delays and mixer by using any external MIDI controller or MIDI apps like sequencers. With the MIDI controllers this app becomes very comfortable to use at live performance.

  2. What a wonderful app!
Just bought it for my iPad and play with it during 3 hours.
I did exactly what i wanted to to do with exept that we need more Oscillator, 3 is not enough!
9 slot/Oscillator for play in realtime with 9 samples will be perfect.
Can't wait for the iPad Pro and FieldScaper with more Oscillator/Sound Slot... ;-)

Anyway, THANKS FOR THIS GREAT APP :-) :-) :-)

  5. Thanks for this fun app.
The oscillator output is much quieter than the recording - I can't find any settings to make it louder. What should I try?

    1. You can increase level of recorded samples (or when you use loop mode) by using options "Input amplify" or "Automatic gain control" in the panel "Audio input controls". This panel opens by the button with the same title on main screen.

    2. Thanks Igor,
I had assigned a midi control for the Main Volume level (fader) and used it to reduce the volume. I still don't know where to find the UI for that. Using the NanoKontrol again fixed my volume problem.

Is it possible to export recorded samples together with the processed Fx?
If not, might this be an added feature for a future update? ;)

  7. Hi, I love using both apps of yours, Sound- & Fieldscaper, great programs!
I'm currently trying to process my voice through Fieldscaper in real-time, but that doesn't seem possible...so I have to record it first, right?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You can record it first or process in real-time as it done in looper. Set the "record start - manual", "record stop - manual" and "scaper start - loop", then tap the "record" button. You will record loop and process it in real time. More details you find in built-in description of the app (tap "?" button).

  8. I love this app. I use it as an effects processor similar to guitar pedals with the Alesis Io Dock. I can't seem to get it to work with Audiobus in the effects section. Is there anything special I need to do? It works perfectly as a stand alone app.

    1. This app supports work with Audiobus but if you have problem with use it try at first completely close all apps by Home button and reboot your iPad. If the problem remains please wait new update that will be soon. In the new version 1.5 I have improved work with IAA and AB. New version will be identified as an Music Instrument and Effect in all host apps include Garageband.

    2. Thanks for the quick response! To clarify; how can I set the output of Fieldscaper to Bluetooth?
Or will setting Enable Bluetooth Input also enable BT output?

      Delete
    3. Sorry, don't have BT devices to try it. But at least enable BT input in settings then link your device with iPad. If in the status line of app (at the top) the labels "In: / Out:" changed value on something instead "Int" perhaps your device had connected. Think I'll test BT device at the next improvement cycle.

sound still comes from iphone speaker.

  13. Fantastic work! Just downloaded it today and am just scratching the surface of sonic possibilities.

I'm using the iPhone version on an iPhone 6s and cannot get multiple oscillators to playback simultaneously. I have single oscillator UNCHECKED in the settings, and am using the "all" button next to the 3 oscillator buttons.

    Is there something I've overlooked?

    Thx!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you unchecked "Single oscillator mode" option in Settings just use button "All" on the main screen to start all three oscillator at once. Or you can start/stop each oscillator by button "Start". LED marker at top of this button will shows that this osc is running. Make sure that in all oscs have loaded sample for playback. Also check output level and current preset. If you not hear this osc try to use "Empty preset" at first.

    1. It's so indeed. In every update I adding only several presets, all for one time will not so interesting ) And it's not so easy creating a lot of new and more or less universal presets at once. So you have great way to create your own presets for your specific samples just a slightly modify one of built-in.

  23. When I try to record using an external Mic through an audio interface no waveform appears. The sample is recorded, but I can't add any effects to it, when I start the oscillator, I just get a hiss. What am I doing wrong? Please help.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. At first open "Audio input controls" panel on the main screen and check that "Input" and "Output" show "External USB, ...". Otherwise check connection of devices. Then check (or reset) all input parameters like "Filters", "Gate", "AGC". When audio input works correctly you will see it on level meters.

      Delete
    2. Thanks for replying. The inputs are working. I can record a sample using the external device, I can play it back and also select it from the file list. Everything seems to be working. The only problem is, no waveform is generated when I record. When I load an a sound previously recorded using external USB, it still has no waveform, but the sound is there.

      Delete
    3. Could you contact me via Feedback form on this site? Please describe more detail what modes you use when recording (buttons below waveform area). Is record pointer visible and move forward during recording? Which value shows the level meter? Which oscillator selected? Maybe you found some other details that can point on this problem? Unfortunately, I can't reproduce it so that understand what is it.

  25. Hi. Is there a bug with ios12 that prevents the inbuilt mic from working properly? I can record with an external mic no problem, plug it in and straight away I see activity on the level meters. With no mic plugged in and input showing inbuilt I get nothing. I need to crank the gain all the way up to max to see any lights on the levels but the signal is then distorted. The inbuilt mic works perfectly with garage band, voice memos and other 3rd party apps...just not in Fieldscaper.

  26. Hello! I am a huge fan of Fieldscaper. My question is about the delay time, is it possible to quantise the delay time to the BPM? I’d love to set a delay that is exactly 1/16 or 1/8 of the BPM time. I can get close but not exact. Thanks!

  28. hello Igor! I am still enamoured with fieldscaper; I use it almost daily.

I have one question though: when recording a session internally (using the R next to the ? button), is it possible to stop the sample from playing, while the effects still play? this is useful for grabbing the effect tails. thank you!

    1. Hello, this version doesn't have this feature. But I plan add new option something like you need. Not sure completely in this workaround, but try to change current playing sample by silence sample. It should plays only effect tail from previous sample. For example, you can doing this in the looper mode, assigned the silence sample to one of sample buttons.

  29. Hi. I've been using this ever since I bought it and love it. However, even though the samples I import from AudioShare or sample from other instruments in AUM are stereo and well eq'd, when I play them in the oscillators they are mono and badly eq'd and really flat. I've got the input controls set to stereo so don't understand. Can you help please?

    1. FieldScaper has three single channel generators. Spatial sound is obtained when using spatial mixer that places each generator in common sound space and can change distance and panorama by LFO. FieldsScaper designed for experiments eith recorded sound or downloaded samples so all built-in presets actively use distortion way of processing to get more brighten and saturated sound. More about distortion options on the Oscillator control panel you can get from description of app. Also you can use built-in three band parametric equalizer to change the sound of each oscillator.

  37. Hello Igor, FieldScaper is a great app, I use it the most among all my other sound apps. I'm a sound designer and I think your app is really amazing. I just was wondering if you were planning to include or will be willing to accept suggestions for some features:

    - Exporting Midi mapping settings to share between devices(as I wrote in a previous post)
    - Leave a tail for the reverb and delay fx whenever you stop an oscillator. (Also, someone asked in a previous post, for which you suggested an interesting workaround)
    - The option to play once the sample or the selected fragment of the sample, currently it loops until you stop it manually, which is great too, but sometimes it would be great for it just to play once and stop automatically.
    - And last, is there a chance to have a preset for preselected fragments of the sample, like if you want to jump from one fragment to another without having to move in and outs manually.

I know any request may be quite complicated to implement, but if possible, it would be great.

    Thanks for your great apps!
