IPAD APP CAFE: I Am a Noisey Person!

In dealing with the title of today’s blog post, I am reporting on the results of an experiment I performed with DRC Polyphonic Synthesizer, AUM and FieldScaper. For the uninitiated, AUM is a utility app that allows you to use and mix several apps and effects. I have previously covered AUM in another post. Likewise, FieldScaper is a field recording/audio-mangling app, also covered by a previous post(feel free to look through the archives). New to the table is DRC polyphonic Synthesizer. DRC is a free app that models an analog polyphonic synth, utilizing two oscillators, a sub oscillator, ring modulation and noise. It has all the usual accoutrements (filter, envelope generator, et al) and an effects section. What’s interesting to note is that the delay and reverb on board can be modulated by an LFO. Because of this feature, I began my sonic brew.

Emptiness Of Reality (Live)

This album was compiled from original tracks of my video demos recorded at live performance on analogue tape on Sony TC-510-2 Tapecorder without mixing and post processing. In videos were used others copies that were processed especially for these videos. Although video don't have name of tracks but these tracks were created as single compositions previously and were used in demos.

These compositions assembled from pieces of real world sounds and fictional samples convey a sense an illusion of reality also as in these compositions usual sounds become something completely different and create another reality.

These compositions are sound art that I create basically with use two my applications SoundScaper and FieldScaper. But also I use many other audio equipments for creating original samples that I use further in these apps.

For samples in these compositions were used synths Roland Juno-60, Korg MS2000, Yamaha DX21, Moog Slim Phatty, Moog Etherwave Theremin, Clavia Nord Lead 3, Casio CZ-101, Polivoks and several DIY soundboxes. For processing source samples I used Roland RE-201 Space Echo, Roland SDE-2000, Akai MFC42, Eventide Harmonizer H949, Yamaha REV7 and several others. Original tapes digitized by RME Fireface UCX.

Polivoks synth with FieldScaper app

Polivoks synth with FieldScaper app. Demo of original sound and processed by FieldScaper with several default presets. Synth connected to iPad through 4-pole headphone jack adapter. No external power, no any extra audio interfaces. Only small adapter (white box on video with input level knob).

In this demo FieldScaper uses one oscillator (from three) in loop mode for processing external sound from Polivoks synth. Three default presets were used within this demo.

Two presets configure FieldScaper osc for processing sound directly as it comes from the input. And one preset slices the sound of input loop on small pieces and plays them in random sequences. Which creates the new and very different from source sound.

iPad can give not bad quality of sound even with internal AD/DA for live performance with processing external sound sources like a synth. Very low cost and lightweight solution.

Here is DIY 4-pole headphone jack adapter (you can make it even smaller) and its diagram:

FieldScaper 1.5 has been released!

FieldScaper ver. 1.5 with full screen field recorder for iPhone in landscape orientation and improved support for control via MIDI has been released.

What's new in this update:

  • Full screen recorder / sample editor for iPhone landscape.
  • Supported Dropbox service for download and upload files.
  • Improved Inter-App Audio support as Musical Instrument and Effect.
  • Supported Inter-App Audio MIDI connection, BPM and transport controls.
  • List of assignable MIDI controls divided by categories.
  • Direct, Pick-up and Scaling modes for faders with MIDI controller.
  • Sending states of buttons and faders for display state on MIDI controller.
  • Improved automatic start for mode "Loop A" in the looper.
  • Improved user interface for built-in description.
  • Updated description of the application.
  • Several minor bugs have been fixed.

FieldScaper has different user interface for iPhone / iPad in portrait and landscape orientation. In portrait orientation the screen is divided between Recorder and Oscillator controls. You can easily record new sample and immediately load and process it in the oscillator.

For more convenient use of this application as field recorder on iPhone just rotate it to landscape orientation. This transforms the user interface into full screen recorder without oscillator. This mode is very useful for recording and editing samples on iPhone.

On iPad in landscape orientation on the screen placed the Recorder and controls for all three Oscillators. This mode is suitable for recording and operating with samples when you use FieldScaper in real-time as instrument with all three oscillators, especially with MIDI controllers.

In addition you can switch the user interface to the mode of Looper. This mode is specially designed for use FieldScaper as real-time effect processor and looper. All controls are made so that you can quickly change presets and samples, use the main controls for oscillators and select the mode for processing the input signal.

FieldScaper live improvisation with MIDI controller

[ More details about this demo (what were used in this setup) ]

[ Complete description of FieldScaper 1.5 in one PDF file ]

FieldScaper live improvisation with MIDI controller

In this demo FieldScaper app on iPad is used as main audio processing unit and fully operated by using external MIDI controller.

What were used in this setup

Two synthesizers (one with additional effect unit) were used as external audio sources for first oscillator in FieldScaper. This oscillator was configured in mode "Looper" - "Effect". Synthesizers were connected to two different input channels of external audio interface in mono mode. In the app these channels combined to one for use in oscillator. For this oscillator was used the slightly modified preset "Dark and foreboding places".

With this preset (as well as others) you can discover a whole new aspects of already familiar sounds and presets of synths. In other demo you can hear how this preset can transform sounding of usual synthesizer pad -

Glitched ambient (FieldScaper app in Looper mode)

Two other oscillators (second and third) were configured for using preloaded samples with several presets. All oscillators were operated by using MIDI controller. The six faders at the right side are assigned on "Main effect" and "Output level" for each oscillator. Buttons below assigned for switch between presets and samples. Knobs at the left side are assigned for mixer "Distance" / "Panorama", filter "Frequency" / "Resonance" and for "Clock" / "Clock offset".

MIDI controller and external audio interface are connected to iPad (in this demo iPad 4 with iOS 9.3.1) thru Lightning to USB camera adapter and usual USB hub. If the controller or audio interface require a power thru USB you need use USB hub with external power adapter.

FieldScaper can fully operated by using external MIDI controller. With advanced MIDI controller you can access many parameters of the app in real time. But even with simple controller you can change basic parameters of oscillators (such as "Main effect" and "Output level") and easily switch between presets and samples. This very conveniently at live performance.

Also FieldScaper has special mode "Looper" in which on the single screen are placed several main controls for oscillators and buttons for quick switching between presets and samples. This mode is specially designed for comfortable use this app for live performance even without external MIDI controllers.
